Cupcake Decorations and Fondant

You can create a whole new (and even sleek) look for your cupcakes using fondant instead of icing when decorating them.

What is fondant exactly? Fondant is basically colored sugar that is cooked until soft and pliable. At this point, it can be rolled with a rolling pin to a desired thickness. The fun thing with fondant is that you can drape it over anything, like a blanket, and you can basically mold it to the shape of the pastry. Also, you can cut any shape out of fondant, and it will hold the form effortlessly.

Where can you find fondant? Most stores that carry the basics for cake decorating will have it. Personally I have found fondant at Michaels Arts and Craft stores and Wal-mart in the craft section (don’t bother looking in the grocery aisle). It is sold in ready-to-use packages, in white or pre-tinted in other colors, pastels typically, but I have seen neons.

Covering Your Cupcakes
Covering a cupcake with fondant is a piece of..well you know.

  1. Lay out the fondant and roll out fondant to desired thickness.
  2. Cover cupcake with fondant.
  3. Smooth fondant around cupcake with your fingers.
  4. Trim off excess fondant at base with spatula.

Here are a few other fondant cupcake decorating suggestions:

  • Before covering the cupcake, if you coat it with a light coat of icing, it helps the fondant stick to the cupcake.
  • Roll your fondant out on a mat or other smooth, clean surface. First, coat the surface lightly with vegetable shortening or dust it lightly with a mixture of cornstarch and confectioner’s (powdered) sugar.
  • Cover the fondant you are not using with with a damp cloth while your are working. Fondant dries out quickly. And before you store any excess fondant, coat it with vegetable shortening, then, wrap it in plastic wrap and place it in a zip-lock plastic bag or an airtight container.

Try it some time. You can even cut out other colors of fondant into shapes to decorate your cupcakes for a different look.
